Current and prospective business owners in Mathare struggle to remain profitable, and <\/span><\/span>start new businesses, due to the high costs of doing business within Mathare. A survey <\/span><\/span>of the business community identified the lack of appropriate working spaces and related <\/span><\/span>infrastructural services as the top barriers to conducting business in Mathare. Participants <\/span><\/span>also highlighted the need for greater dialogue between the business community and gov<\/span><\/span>ernment around investment and planning.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The provision of services to the business community is important for the development of <\/span><\/span>a robust enterprise ecosystem in Mathare, and the business community calls upon govern<\/span><\/span>ment, civil society, and the private sector to take action. One of the most effective first steps <\/span><\/span>to address these concerns is to provide low-cost, appropriate working spaces in unutilized <\/span><\/span>areas around the community. Providing these spaces is a way to centralize service deliv<\/span><\/span>ery, decrease the cost of doing business, create entry points for young entrepreneurs, and <\/span><\/span>improve community cohesion.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This policy brief discusses how the provision of working spaces and integration of infra<\/span><\/span>structure in Mathare promotes economic and social development in the community. The <\/span><\/span>brief is derived from a mapping of the enterprise ecosystem and how it interacts with <\/span><\/span>the business community that was carried out by SITE in Kiamaiko and Mlango Kubwa wards <\/span><\/span>in Mathare sub-county between April and May 2018.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
