Catherine Wangui, 28 years dropped out of school at form 2 due to lack of school fees …

Catherine Wangui, a 28-year-old mother in Nairobi’s Kibera settlement, knows what it means to fight for a future. Forced to drop out of school at Form Two due to poverty, she spent years doing odd jobs—just trying to survive.

Through heartbreak, relocation, and the loss of her first business during Kenya’s post-election violence, Catherine never gave up. Today, she runs a small general shop—just 36 square feet—packed with household goods and big dreams.

With support from her women’s savings group Sacred Heart, and training through the WEZESHA JAMII project, Catherine has turned her life around. She now pays school fees for her daughter and younger siblings, supports her family, and inspires other women to start their own businesses.

Her dream? To grow into a wholesale shop, create jobs, and help her group buy land for safe, dignified homes.

“This project gave us skills—not handouts. Now, we have a future.”
